line back to the 1300s and to the founding fathers of Denmark in the 1400s and
1500s. Trolleholm Castle is Scania Sweden is named for his ancestors and has

I was fascinated by his original oil on canvas paintings and particularly smitten with one featuring whales. This was a very large original oil on canvas, about 6’ in length as I remember it, with a list price was somewhere above $4000, and I managed to talk Robert down to $3500. Being homeless at 17 taught me a lot about saving and value, I’d saved every penny of my military pay that I could during boot camp and twelve months of training school and I knew value when I saw it. I wanted the painting more than the car I was saving up for."

"There was another smaller piece featuring dolphins that we negotiated as well. The day before I left the islands, I went back to the gallery, but hadn’t put together the money, so I browsed limited prints and settled on a few I loved. An associate of Wyland’s put three prints aside for me, and I rushed out to get the cash from the bank, about $650, but I never made it back. My military flight got moved up and I had to rush to the base to head off to my duty station in Japan."

"Today, just thinking about it, I’m crushed.
What about those who aren't familiar with art and don't know where to begin? What basics can you tell them about choose art?

The medium is important. Although stretched canvas prints are
the #1 most popular choice, we also like the brilliant colors and unmatched beauty
of HD Metal prints. Why? HD Metal prints include a back frame and are ready to
hang without needing any extras. With HD Metal prints, you also don’t need to
decide on which finishing coating to use. You get a high-gloss finish
automatically at no extra cost.

Sizing art can be difficult. Can you provide some sizing tips?

For a master bedroom where art
will be hung on either side of the bed, 30 x 20 inches (77 x 51 cm) or a few
inches either way is usually just about perfect. This also is a good size
wherever a single artwork will be used to accent, such as over the bed in a
guest bedroom, in a hallway, dining room or kitchen.

With framed art, don’t
forget the frame adds to the size, so you might want to start with a smaller
size artwork. For example, the 1.5" gallery wrap frame adds a total of
3" all around to the size of the artwork. Thus, if you wanted a finished
size of about 30 x 20 inches (77 x 51 cm), you’d want to start with art that
was about 27 x 17 inches or a few inches either way.

What about sizing art for other rooms in your home?

For feature art in your home or office, another size that’s
usually just about perfect is around 42 x 28 inches (108 x 72 cm) or a few
inches either way. If you want artwork to dominate most any room you may find
that 60 x 48 inches (154 x 123 cm) or a few inches either way fills the need.

For
large bathrooms, 24 x 16 inches (62 x 41 cm) is often ideal for centerpiece
art, yet if you want to hang two artworks, you’ll usually want something
smaller, say 16x12 inches for a master bathroom or 12x10 inches for a half
bathroom. Again, don’t forget these are finished sizes, including any wrapping
frame.

Anything else you'd like to share?

As a successful, notable writer, photographer
and artist, William Robert Stanek has met CEOs, presidents and royals, and yet
it was a meeting with Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush in the early 1990s that
he remembers most vividly. Both were trustees of the National Awards program at
the Freedoms Foundation at the time, and he had recently received the
Distinguished Flying Cross for his wartime service to the USA and the George
Washington Honor Medal from the foundation.

“It was an honor,” William says, to have those great men
shake his hand and mean it when they congratulated him for his achievements,
but for William those moments marked a beginning, for in his view he had not
yet achieved anything. And so he set out determined to make his mark on the
world. Decades later, most would agree he has indeed succeeded.

Here's a Q&A with William Robert Stanek from a past interview...

For aspiring creatives and those who collect your work, can
you talk about your creative process?

"Every artwork begins with a plan.

we capture the essence of the location in a series of images," William

William says, "having an intimate understanding of the many ways the
lenses and cameras I use capture the scene, understanding the way light changes
throughout the day, the way light changes in different seasons, the way light
changes in different parts of the world... More..."

Talent is what you really mean, but you're being modest?

"Talent, raw and refined, is essential to success," William says.

not to. I enjoy seeing how my favorites change through the seasons and over

First and most importantly, the Read Indies team is jumping in to help Robert and will blog here and elsewhere on his behalf. Our first official post in the Read Indies blog is posted also @ http://readindies.blogspot.com/2021/07/goodnight-robert-goodnight-moon.html.

Robert Stanek is often asked by readers why he talks about his military career and commendations especially as the subject is so difficult and painful for him to talk about. Robert blogged about some of his experiences here @ http://readindies.blogspot.com/2020/07/memories-of-long-road-home.html and especially about unexpected dangers those in the military face, not in the battlefield, but in the bases where they are housed.

Here's what Robert Stanek had to say about his military career and heritage:

His forefathers fought and bled Red, White and Blue in every war the USA has ever faced, from the French & Indian Wars and the Revolutionary War that shaped our nation to WWI and WWII that saved our world from tyranny to the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanastan and beyond. Although many of his ancestors never came home from the battlefield and many others took the battlefield home with them and were never the same again, he's proud of this heritage of service and sacrifice, and he's proud to have served his country in dark hours. His service to our nation taught him a great deal about duty, sacrifice and honor.

Robert says he gave his youth and his health to these wars and conflicts, his family suffered greatly, and yet he would not trade these experiences, for they forged him into who he is today. Because of his service, he says he will always know that when the darkest of hours arrives he will not hesitate. When asked, he answered. When called, he went. When death stared up from the void, he did not fear. He gave because it was his duty and because he felt it was the right thing to do.

His accomplishments during his military service earned me 29 commendations, including the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal. When he left the military, he was one of the most highly decorated in the command. The base commander and his supervisors loved it when he put on his dress blues and participated in the various parades and celebrations on base, especially Memorial Day and the 4th of July. Robert says he's met royalty. A crowned prince, a princess of a city state, a queen. He's met and dined with presidents, including George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and a few generals, including Colin Powell and H. Norman Schwarzkopf. They've offered their hands to shake, given toasts in his honor for his duty. Duty, honor and country mean a lot to Robert, and these themes resonate in his many books.

Yet the main reason Robert says he talks openly about his combat service is to help those who, like him, have taken the battlefield home with them, to give them hope, to let them know that they can use their pain to accomplish many things. He survived a crashlanding, being shot, being stabbed and yet he is still here. "Physical wounds come with consequences, and yet the wounds of war are not always physical, and not all wounds are from combat," he says. "As wounded warriors, we suffer, but we need not suffer in silence." This message of hope in the face of adversity and pain is powerful and heartfelt.

Hats off to Robert for his service and for his dedication to those he served with.
Robert Stanekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12853491495953234680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1499557763484812646.post-50291781280373767702020-06-27T21:53:00.002-07:002020-06-27T21:58:31.296-07:00What's Around the Town Books Been Up to?Around the Town Books is a blog I always meant to get back to but never had time for with all my other writing and publishing initiatives.
It seems Amazon would rather be known as a company that is unfriendly to persons with disabilities than to make the simple changes needed.

Although the initiatives from the American Library Association and the Association of Research Libraries are general to e-readers, they relate more strongly to Kindles because of specific features of Kindles that constitute advanced communications under federal law.

Amazon made changes to the Kindles that make it so certain people with disabilities can't use Kindles. Specifically, Amazon removed a 3.5mm audio jack from its Kindle e-readers, among other changes, which makes the basic Kindles unusable to persons with print disabilities. Federal law requires equipment used for advanced communication services (ACS) be accessible to, and usable by, individuals with disabilities.

The FCC granted a one-year waiver to allow Kindle and others to continue to be available on sale. Now that the waiver is expiring Amazon may be forced by the FCC to upgrade the capabilities of all Kindles to accommodate the needs of the disabled. Amazon is fighting for more waivers and extensions.

The 3.5mm audio jack itself is a ~.05 component that is connected to a signal converter (and not any kind of speaker) that is itself a ~.05 to ~.10 component. The $1.25 cost of the changes is an estimate of Amazon's total cost per unit for design changes (for example an opening must be added to the case where the audio jack will go) and the required components, though the actual cost is more likely closer to .50 per unit.

If these changes aren't made, Amazon may have to remove the contentious features from basic kindles to remain in compliance with federal law.

The American Library Association and the Association of Research Libraries are urging Amazon to make these changes. I support the changes and hope you will too in your social media.

E-readers allow those with visual impairments to enjoy printed words they otherwise might not have access to--and just as importantly, in ways they otherwise would not be able to. In the US alone, there are around 7 million people with a visual disability, according to a 2012 report from the National Federation of the Blind.

Without such ready access to printed words in books, newspapers, magazines, and beyond, those with visual impairments must often go without or rely on less tenable means of access.
Essentially, in my understanding what happened is Amazon made changes to the Kindles that makes it so certain people with disabilities can't use Kindles.

In January, the FCC granted a one-year waiver to allow Kindle and others to continue to be available on sale. The waiver is expiring and it looks like Amazon may be forced by the FCC to upgrade the capabilities of all Kindles to accommodate the needs of the disabled. However, Amazon is fighting for more waivers.

The American Library Association and the Association of Research Libraries are among the leading voices urging the changes: ow.ly/EezWn. According to the Opposition to Coalition of E-Reader Manufacturers' Petition for Waiver (http://www.arl.org/storage/documents/publications/ereader-waiver-opposition-27oct2014.pdf).

What do you think? My .02: Amazon never should have removed such capabilities knowing that the changes would make basic Kindles useless to persons with print disabilities. The audio jack and the related components likely aren't more than $1.25 - $1.75 of cost to produce a Kindle.

The ALA and ARL are urging changes. I support those changes and hope you will too in your social media.
It's release day for "This Mortal Coil. After the Machines" and it's a new series that's been available as a pre-order since August 15. I've been working to spread the word about it for the past week. Normally, I'd be heads down writing, which is what I'm going to go back to after this.

Looks like I had a few additional sales in each of the markets I can get sales data from quickly. Getting sales data from the other markets will take time, for some up to 90 days.

In honor of this event, I'll be donating $200 to each of the veterans-related charities I normally work with. This is on top of what I normally donate annually.

My donations are normally anonymous, but for this event I will donate in my name, as I've done here:

I personally spent most of Monday and Tuesday promoting the event, the authors and books involved, not for my sales but for the opportunity to give back and to help others.

Over all, the Veteran's Day charity drive went well. More than 40 authors participated and raised money for veterans-related charities. Although we didn't reach our goal of $10,000, it looks like we raised about $5000 in total. A pretty great day!

You can read about the participating authors at the Read Indies blog.

Back in the day, I remember spending all day on Veteran's Day marching on parade or slinging burgers in this or that fundraiser. Sometimes there'd be 6, 8 or 10 of us out there all day slinging burgers. By the end of the day, we were sweaty and tired, but we felt good. We'd done something. We'd given back, even if only in a small way.
In addition to Around the Town Books, I've been very active in the indie community since 2007. My primary blog is Read Indies (http://readindies.blogspot.com/) where you'll find posts about the writing life as well as posts celebrating indie authors and books.

On twitter, @ReadIndies is where I tweet about indies and support indies. My primary twitter account is @RobertStanek.

I also host the registered twitter memes:

#yalit
#kidslit
#goindie
#freetoday
#amblogging

These twitter memes are excellent resources for writers wanting to spread the word about their books.

Ongoing right now is a spring blog tour leading up to the 3rd Annual Summer of Indie Book event.

What is Summer of Indie?

Summer of Indie is an annual event celebrating indie authors and books. Each year about 100 authors join the event. If you're a writer and you haven't joined us before, I hope you will consider it.

If you join Go Indie on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/goindie/), you can then join the ongoing event at: https://www.facebook.com/events/675766335819751/.

I hope you and your fellow authors will use these resources. It's what they're there for!

Thanks for reading,
Snark ahead...

Henceforth and retroactively to the beginning of time, all
authors must have Melissa Foster’s express written permission before publishing
any book, article, short story, or any other creative work. Before discussing
or promoting your work by any means or in any form, you also must have Melissa
Foster’s express written permission.

If you are or claim to be a bestselling author, henceforth
and forever (and retroactively to the beginning of time and after getting
express written permission from Melissa Foster), you must explicitly state all
details regarding such matters. Specifically, you must state that you are “A _(Insert

called ________, which appeared on the _________ bestselling list in the #
______ position.” You must then link to screenshots of the bestseller listing
that have been independently certified by the White House and signed by the
President of the United States, forgoing that you must have Melissa Foster’s

being a Vulcan, Melissa Foster does not actually understand simple human compassion,
empathy, decency, fairness or any other silly human sentiments or emotions, though she does a superb job of feigning that she does.
Thus, if the feet bathing ceremony does not work out in your favor, you are
expected to do the universe a favor and commit hari-kari. If you are lacking a

cleaned.
You may have seen me on CNN, heard me talk on NPR, or read about me in the Wall Street Journal.

I've been a strong supporter of my fellow authors ever since my first book was published in 1995. Back then, I supported writers through Writer's Gallery, Internet Daily News, and Internet Job Center (archives at http://www.tvpress.com/).

In 2007, I launched Go Indie to support independent authors, independent publishers, and independent bookstores. Go Indie has evolved into:
Although set in the fantasy universe of Ruin Mist, the book is very different from the previously published Ruin Mist books. For starters, the story takes place in an earlier age and assumes no prior knowledge of the world or its characters. This means readers new to the books and current readers can pick up the book, start reading, and enjoy the story.

In fact, Breath of Fire goes back to Ruin Mist's earliest beginnings. Long-time readers finally get to live in the era of titans and dragons, and get to see the rise of the greatest heroes and villains of Ruin Mist's darkest ages.

The book tells the story of Rastín and his people. For thousands of years the ageless masters have ruled the hundred worlds, conquering all who oppose them while raising those who bring them glory. But in remote Karthold, Rastín struggles to keep alive the memories of his fallen people and fulfill the wishes of his ailing father. For an Alv he is young; he has no great power to help him, no true magic to light his way and keep him safe. Yet as his life turns increasingly grim, he must find the courage and resourcefulness to befriend his most savage enemies if there is to be hope for him and his people.

Get the book at Amazon!

Thanks for reading! It is wonderful to see other top authors speak up for libraries through Authors for Library Ebooks (a4le), a support campaign for library ebooks from the American Library Association! I’ve been a professionally published author since 1995 and have written many, many books (William Stanek for technical works, William Robert Stanek for learning books and compilations, and Robert Stanek for everything else I write). As a technology journalist, I've written for PC Magazine, Dr. Dobbs, TechNet Magazine and a variety of other leading magazines. As a technology writer, I've written for Simon & Schuster, Random House, Macmillan, Pearson, Microsoft, O'Reilly and other publishers.

My publishers and I have digital distribution with several dozen retail and library partners. I probably have more titles in digital distribution than just about any other author as there are nearly 600 Robert Stanek titles available at libraries worldwide in digital as well as a few of my William Stanek titles too. I've been in digital in libraries for many years and have been an outspoken supporter of libraries and digital in libraries for many years and it has been a great experience.

If you're an author or reader who wants to show your support for library ebook lending, join in the a4le fun by tweeting or blogging to show your support. Learn more at http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/a4le.
